I was actually hoping that this would be the next 1:1 bust and it looks great. Not sure if it uses glass eyes or not. I would guess not.

Damn you, Sideshow. I just may have to get this.
A co-worker and I have this ongoing obsession with Ackbar at work. We spent a slow afternoon one day watching Ackbar on YouTube. We both have custom-made Ackbar wallpapers on our computers. For his recent birthday, I got him the Ackbar GG bust. How can I possibly pass this one up?

This looks amazing, but I think this one's success, with such wide areas, is going to come down to the paint job. This is handled by the factory, and we've all seen the work the factory SS uses has been pushing out. Not great.

I want this bad, but I am very hesitant to get excited. I can just imaging it looking like someone got a spray can ans sprayed dots all over the forehead (like MR Gree, but worse). I'm gonna wait to see how my Grievous turn out, and decide from there.

I truly hope I am dead wrong.

Mighty_Jabba

Mighty_Jabba
03-13-2009, 02:12 AM
I think they went with a bit bigger edition size for Grievous because he's in Clone Wars and they expect some increased interest, but I wouldn't expect more than 500 for Ackbar, and it could be less. Greedo was only 300 and Bossk just 250 (and they still have him in stock).

Tusken_Raiders

300 would be a lot better...Bossk at 250? Wow, never looked at the edition size..Probably would have sold better if Fett was released...

Chris Wyman
03-13-2009, 08:33 AM
Edition size? I'd like to see no more than 300. I've said this before and I'll say it again...the last thing I want is to spend the money for this piece only to see it clearanced out down the road. Honestly, if they'd just set the edition size at the amount of Pre-orders, that would be great.

Ordered mine - I would be very surprised to see an edition size above 300. I think the character's following will be similar to Greedo. Grievous and Maul have the evil coolness factor which just always seems to sell well. I think the Greedo, Bossk and now Ackbar will appeal more to the completists where as the higher edition busts all had the ability to appeal to the collector that may just want 1 or 2 busts in their collection.

True, but Yoda took forever to sell and I would think he's a popular character...

I_need_a_hero
03-13-2009, 09:57 AM
I think Yoda's problem was because other life size Yoda items have alreday been done before. There are quite a few full size statues and busts already in the market from other comapanies. Yoda is the only bust I dont have but I already had a life size statue of him so the bust was easier to pass on.

I agree that pictures don't do these busts justice, but seeing them in person is something else entirely. I do think that glass eyes would make them look more realistic (especially Bossk) but generally they do look like like. Everyone who has been to my house finds them very disconcerting to be around.

Interesting point about this bust. I looked at the 360 degree Sideshow applet that allows you to rotate the bust and look at it from all angles. If you are planning on lighting the bust from above (or just using room overhead lights) the eyes will be left in shadow and be rather dark, which is a shame considering these are a real focal point of the piece (see the Sideshow thing and you'll see what I mean). Best lighting will be acheived from the sides and/or below to light up those eyes!

Agreed the eyes especially since they're painted have to be well lit.

Here's a not so flattering view

http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/swexperience/sdcc09/setup-ssc/images/05sscbusts-012a.jpg

The eyes, being a focal point for this character, glass eyes would have brought this fish-head to life. Easy pass. I don't go easy on life-size pieces, because of their cost, size.. and due to their size, they command lots of attention in a collection of smaller items.

EV9D9
07-31-2009, 09:52 PM
Well, I think it's pretty clear by now that Sideshow, despite the outcry from us collectors, isn't going to use glass eyes. They are not even used in the new $1,300 Darth Vader bust...perhaps it's cost prohibitive, dunno http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Mighty_Jabba
07-31-2009, 10:37 PM
I don't really think it looks that bad on Ackbar, although I haven't seen it in person and of course glass eyes would be preferable. I think you're right that Sideshow is not going to use glass/acrylic eyes anytime soon. It might be that their factories just don't do that kind of thing, or don't do it well. Or it might increase the amount of time required, or increase the number of defects. Who knows? Ultimately most of these reasons boil down to cost.

MasterAbsinthe

Glass eye's would be the way to go but I think the bust still look's good.

If I were to speculate, I would guess that glass eyes and polystone don't work well together. IIRC, Polystone changes shape slightly (shrinking, I think) during curing, so it would be hard to get a glass eye into the socket before the polystone had hardened and then have it fit right afterwards.

Mighty_Jabba
08-02-2009, 06:35 PM
Well, they made the terminator bust with a glass eye, and it's polystone. Of course, it had internal wiring for the other light-up eye, so maybe that made it easier to go ahead and put a glass eye in. I don't know.

Neal
08-02-2009, 06:52 PM
The Gentle Giant Ackbar bust has glass eyes, and that is also made out of polystone. Of course, it's a much smaller scale, but the effect still works exceptionally well.

jumpman23

I think putting glass eyes on it shouldn't be hard & I do not think it will pose a significant jump on the cost given the ES Sideshow normally runs. But like most of you had already mentioned it is a stunning piece even w/ the glass eyes!

He really is gigantic. I haven't sorted out where I'm going to put him yet.
In spite of his size, he feels lighter than the Grievous bust. I haven't checked to see if that's because he actually *is* lighter or if it's just that the Grievous is so dense that it just feels that way.

I think they are really pretty great. They have a high gloss finish to them, and the irises are a shiny gold instead of a matte yellow, which I think gives them quite a bit of life and sparkle.

I think life size busts do actually take up quite a bit of room if you want to display them well. For example, I have room on top of some of my cases where they would fit, but they wouldn't look that great up there. It can also be hard to find locations that are deep enough to display them.

Well I just got my Ackbar bust (#53) and am overall happy with it (eyes look good), but have a minor gripe. I was expecting a bit of a "wetter" look and not so matte- kind of like squid skin or something. This is especially true around the nostrils and mouth- even the prototype seemed to have wet looking mucus in/around the nose- it just adds more realism to the piece.

Overall, though, a quality piece.

Oh, c'mon Chris, how can Brandon be blinded by the 3 busts that have come out this year! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif (shhhh - I didn't say that)

That is a sweet bust though. Is it heavy? The Grievous had some heft to it.

IT'S A TRAP!

Ackbar is in hand and is incredible!!! An enormous box was waiting in the hall when I got home. My 2-year-old informed me I'd gotten "a figure" in the mail. That's quite an understatement! I highly recommend anyone sitting on the fence for this guy to go ahead and track one down - seems like Ackbar is moving faster than the other low edition ones (Bossk, Greedo) before him.

Depending on the color temperature of the lighting involved, that could be a major factor. Tungsten lighting like incandescent light bulbs will give it a warm orange cast if not corrected properly.
