Diamond Select Toys: Official Look At New 1/4 scale Star Wars Figures! (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Diamond_Select_Toys_Official_Look_At_New_14_scale_ Star_Wars_Figures_116528.asp)

Not bad for $80 bucks, I might pick a select few of these up. What does everyone else think? Which ones will you be picking up?

I read all the previous posts and noticed that nobody took into consideration that almost every picture that was posted was a prototype or pre-production piece! If you go to the artasylum.com website you can see updated pictures of the first three pieces to be released and they are amazing and the likenesses are impeccable so maybe some people should restate whether or not they like these guys... I personally think they rock! everyone should head on over to artasylum.com to get the updated pictures.

Also, why does ANH OB-1 have an ROTJ Luke saber? http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm with you. I saw them in person at SDCC and I just wasn't impressed then, and I'm still not now.

They don't look as laughable as some people were acting they were, and for someone who can't afford PFs, they might be a decent way to get some larger size figures. But I have no interest in them personally -- at least not the ones we've seen so far.

In that vein I can think of better ways to waste money.

Bigger and cheaper doesn't mean better or a better value to spend money on. I would recommend just saving the money and purchasing something worthwhile once saved up rather than settle for something that is much less in both value and quality.

Yes, I'm familiar with that philosophy re: the droids. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm not saying that I agree with it, but I could see some people liking them. Different strokes.

Let's just hope this abomination never gets made. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Has to be the WORST larger scale Palpy/Sidious ever made, even if it's just a prototype.

I would just as soon stick with my Sideshow 12" figures. These larger ones just don't seem all that appealing - Maul's face looks like the red is too bright. Plus, I'm sure they won't come with as many accessory pieces as the SS stuff.

Would be interesting to see the packaging pics, though.

ROTS Obi Wan Kenobi- Quarter scale figure (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Diamond_Select_Toys_New_Ultimate_Quarter_Scale_Rev ealed_118439.asp)

Best human likeness from this line so far, next to Darth Maul's.
I wonder if the pictures are flipped, because his most famous opponent fighting stance was when facing off Grievous, with his left arm sprawled out.

Hopefully a 1:4 ROTS Anakin and 1:4 AOTC Padm will soon follow. Grievous and Qui-Gon would be my follow-up wants.

I'm not going to categorically dismiss this line just because it costs less and the sculpts may not be 100% on each piece (or even any piece). I think the point here is to be affordable with decent enough sculpts. What's funny is, I think some of these might end up being better than SS's PFs, but nobody will admit it because that'd just make them look silly for spending $250+ on non-articulated statues. Of what I've seen (and they are just promo pics), Maul is shaping up nicely and the Obi looks like it could be good. The Han sculpt looks a little like SS's Bespin 1/6 Han, which isn't exactly a compliment. I'm waiting for Vader and Anakin. But, I definitely won't dismiss the whole line now ahead of time.

Having seen them in person at Comic-Con, I think it is funny that someone would compare these in quality to the SS PFs. They are large inexpensive articulated toys to play with, which is a good quality for some, but high quality items worth collecting as display pieces? I personally dont think so.

Im very selective in the SS PFs that I purchase; I only have three so far. If I thought the SS PFs looked as bad as the Diamond I would own none.

compairing these to SS PF statues is just absurd

compairing these to SS PF statues is just absurd

I don't think I was being absurd. I think comparisons are allowed anytime, especially since both lines are the same size. Also, although I'm fond of the SS PFs and wouldn't mind paying $250 for characters I love, I wouldn't mind sacrificing some detail for cheaper versions of characters that I consider less essential.

Two things I've noticed about Maul: (1) the Diamond has brighter red paint than the SS PF and (2) the Diamond has colored the lips black, unlike SS, which had red lips.

**edit: especially when (if) Diamond gets to troop builders: I can't imagine that the more easily sculpted armor (when compared to face sculpts) wouldn't help make the cheaper troops more ideal for having a few next to a Vader PF. I can imagine having three or four troopers in different poses backing up Vader. I think that'd be cool without too much of a "mix and match" factor.

Jedi_Ethik

Not rude at all. And I think you're right in regards to materials used--Diamond is going to be very much the "toy" when compared to the quality of materials that SS offers.

I think the challenge for Diamond is going to be making a 1/4 scale figure that functions as a toy but, when posed, looks similar enough to a PF to meet the casual observer's (i.e. the house guests') "coolness test." This is the phenomenon of when house guests who aren't hardcore Star Wars fans come over and say, "wow, I know who that is supposed to be." Certainly, people that follow SW collecting will know the difference in craftsmanship. But, I don't see why Diamond can't offer at least a comparable product after we consider things like pricing.

I think that sometimes the discrepancies in judging pieces between collectors comes in whether we include price in our initial evaluation or not. [For instance, if success rate = manufacturer quality / price, then it is possible for two companies to have the same rate of success even though one company's product is higher quality--the problem is that our view of quality is already affected by what we know the price to be.] I cut SS less slack because of price, but generally consider the results successful. Diamond, to me, has a lower bar to clear. But, even with that said, Diamond ought to be able to execute a likeness that is at least in the same ballpark as SS's. I mean, even Hasbro (and Kenner before them) could get some sculpts close to what was on screen.

I just realized that I used way too many words to make a simple point... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif...and I can't believe I used an equation (someone correct me if my math doesn't add up).

Diamond Select Toys Ultimate Quarter Scale Mace Windu Revealed (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Diamond_Select_Toys_Ultimate_Quarter_Scale_Mace_Re vealed_119053.asp)

http://www.rebelscum.com/2008/dst-UQSMace.jpg

The likeness looks more like Samuel L. Jackson than the SSC 1/ 6 Mace Windu does.

However, in all fairness one has to mention that the original 1/6 SSC Mace Windu sculpt with neutral expression didn't pass the license approval for some odd reason.

If the final product looks like this, I will definitely consider getting it. Might looks okay next to the Hasbro Jango, scale-wise.

Hey blue leader, just a heads up, had you been keeping up with the art asylum blogs, you would know that there is no choice when designing the packaging for these guys, I wasn't too keen on it either. But the Lucas gods have spoken and this is a must for them, everything has to have the clone wars packaging no matter what. Originally there were other designs but they all got the axe. sorry
