Got my shipping notice. I would be getting it today if someone was home.

As it is I'm going to have to wait until Saturday.

This "live" signature requirement is starting to bother me. I live in a nice area, it's safe to leave packages on my porch. I don't know why SS won't accept the FedEx "ok to leave" signed receipt?

I too live in a nice neighbourhood and had to provide signed receipt for GG products. I think it's more FedEx than Sideshow or GG that are wanting to have the signature. If the package is of a high value it absolves them and covers them from someone saying "I didn't receive my package" and going through claims (even if they did receive it). I know alot of us here can't even fathom that someone would pull this kind of stunt, but I can pretty much guarantee someone out there has, hence the signature requirement.

I agree with you that the signature requirement can be a bit of an annoyance, but it's a prudent measure on the part of the company, as Stripes has already outlined.

I liked the suggestion about having a redwood forest background image displayed behind it. I'll think about doing that with mine, after I get an acrylic case for it.

My Speeder Bike with Biker Scout should arrive on Tuesday.

I hate to spend the money on such higher end collectibles, but I have wanted this type of prop-replica item since I was a kid.

I hope that someone out there is designing/building a custom display case for sale. The last thing I want is for this to get dusty.

I too am waiting for the final payment on the 22nd. Normally, it takes about five days for stuff to get to me here in Florida. I honestly have not a clue where I'm going to put this or what I'm going to do with it. I have no room for it to be sitting in the box, let alone on a shelf somewhere. This is however, a good problem to have in my opinion. I could not be getting one and then I'd have a whole other set of problems to deal with. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I did know that from reading the newsletter as well. For me it makes no difference either way because I won't be displaying it until I have an acrylic case for it. That will take some time to arrange so I’m in no hurry right now.

Several sources in the past. Online I've used CasesForCollectibles.com for some of my larger items. For this one I may use them again, but I'm also going to investigate using a local acrylic fabricator in my area this time around. The shipping charges on large items can sometimes rival the cost of the actual case itself.

I set up mine yesterday, and I'll see about getting pics up at some point, but in the meantime, here's some random thoughts:

- The base is *heavy*. I think it is more than half the weight of the entire thing. Probably intended to make it very stable.
- The mounting rod is keyed to it only fits in one direction....on one side. I don't know why they did this. The end that fits in the base is round and smooth, so the whole thing can (and does) drift around anyway...having the end that fits in the bike only go in one way just makes it harder to get lined up.
- An unpacking and setup instruction sheet would not have been unwarranted. You can figure it out, but it's hard to tell by just looking at it how fragile the bike is, and there's enough little tiny greebley bits that it's hard to sort out a "safe" way to pick it up and put it on the mounting rod.
- The packing is highly optimized for getting it to you safely and not for repacking the thing. When I opened it up, I wasn't sure if I could ever get it back in the box should I need to. Now that I've set it up, I'm *certain* I could never repack it the way it was. Should I need to transport it at some point, I think I'll probably consider placing it in a giant box full of packing material rather than try to get it back into its original box (the original box would be fine for storage with light moving...you just don't want to try to get all the supports and reinforcements back in for a real move).
- At least on mine, the limited articulation in the Scout was pretty stiff initially. Stiff enough that when I went to move the head, there was this heart-stopping moment as I felt it "pop" free in my hand. It was just the initial freeing of the joint, but the combination of the popping sensation and the sudden movement created a very convincing illusion that I had just snapped the head off my brand new Scout. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
- Ignoring the desire to put a case on it for a moment, the small footprint of the base means that in spite of the bike's overall size, it fits in places it seems like it shouldn't.
- My take is that a case/cover, while always nice-to-have as a practical matter, is not essential for this piece. The surface of the bike is not overly complicated the way the MR Y-Wing or Falcon are. There's some greeble, sure, but the bulk of the shapes are smooth surfaces that could be dusted relatively easily. Like other PF's the Scout himself has cloth on him, and the black bodysuit may present an interesting dusting challenge, but I don't think it's insurmountable. Again, that's not to say that it wouldn't benefit from a cover, just that the effort required to keep it dusted wouldn't be a full-time job the way it would be some other items.

In spite of the couple of annoyances I mention above, this is a gorgeous piece and I don't expect anybody who ordered one will be disappointed with their purchase. I remember being deeply impressed by the old Hasbro 1/6 Speeder Bike, and while that is still one of the finest things Hasbro ever made, this is in a whole different league.

How much articulation is in the head and arm? Can you swivel the bike 360 degrees on the base? Would you say this piece has that "wow!" factor?

Thanks in advance

Truer words were never spoken. My scout actually arrived on Thursday. I opened the box and pulled the scout out...and that's as far as I got as I couldn't even put him back in the box correctly. Seeing as how I don't have room at the moment to display it, I just shut the box and put it away.

Oh absolutely, and no matter how easy something is to dust, a cover always reduces the workload.

How much articulation is in the head and arm? Can you swivel the bike 360 degrees on the base? Would you say this piece has that "wow!" factor?

The left arm has just enough articulation to allow you to attach the bike grip (which is permanently molded into that hand) to the control arm.
The right arm has some shoulder articulation (limited as much by the armor as the actual joint) to help you get the gun in a raised-and-firing position.
The head appears to be a ball joint, and seems similar to the one on the PF Boba Fett. I didn't test it for a full range of motion, but between it at the right arm, it's a cinch to get the two lined up precisely right for him to be aiming and firing.

I'm pretty sure you could swivel the whole thing, but the base doesn't seem to be designed for this, and you'll be taking risks with the center of gravity if you do so.

As to the "Wow" factor, I think it does have it, but it is easily masked. What I mean is that it is big and impressive when it's off by itself, but if you've got it near other PF statues, the consistency of scale has a weird side effect of diminishing the percieved size. It's a completely unexpected effect. When I initially set it up, I had it hanging out by itself at one end of the room and it really stood out and looked incredible. However, I've needed to move some stuff around temporarily while I make some changes to my display arrangement, and I've got it sitting next to my PF Grievous for a few days, and having something else large, impressive and (this is important) *in scale* makes it seem somehow diminished (the effect works both ways too, it seems...Grievous lacks some of his imposing presence when put next to the bike).

I'm fairly certain you can get that exact pose if you want it, though I had some difficulty with the shoulder plate of the armor restricting movement.

I lie. The proto's pose is trivial to get. I think I may not have worked the joint completely free or I was simply being overcautious when I was posing it the first time, but when I tinkered with it tonight, I had no difficulty getting it to move.

I wish that SSC had made the Scout Trooper fully articulated. It's a great figure with a lot of detail, and I wish SSC had just taken it to that next level. At least, the upper body could have been a little better articulated in order to give us more options for posing the figure.

Like all of these high end collectibles, they seem to cost about twice what I would actually like to pay for them. For instance, I got my MR Falcon for about half price. To me, that was a fair price to pay. I feel the same about the SSC Premium Format Biker Scout. At half the price, this would be an awesome piece. At full price, it's nice.

Overall, I am glad that I purchased this piece. It looks like something straight out of the Lucas film archives, and owning items like this has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid.

Also, I usually warn my wife in advance when the large or big ticket items are going to arrive. This one was a suprise, and she handled it quite well. Bring on R2 and 3PO.

My Scout/Speeder bike is due tomorrow... and completely out of the blue. I've had this thing on order since its debut, but canceled a couple of weeks ago. I had second thoughts about that decision and put my name back on the waitlist, assuming I'd have some more time to think it over. That was Friday. Today I get a shipping notice in my inbox with tomorrow as the delivery date. First, that just goes to show how many people canceled this thing, and second, didn't Sideshow skip a step? Shouldn't I have received an e-mail offering me a choice to turn my reservation into a purchase or cancel it? Either way I'm happy to be getting it, I just wasn't expecting it so soon (and neither was my credit card...).

Totally agree. This is why I stopped collecting the 12" figures. I don't want to pose anything. I want it in a great pose and for it to stay that way.

LOL, I'm sorry but I find this really funny. Yeah, if I could have gotten my MR Falcon for say one quarter of the price I would have thought that was an awesome price too!! If they had given it to me for free I would have been even happier with the deal!! LOL!!!!

The truth is I paid over $2K for mine and I still think it is completely worth it; If this Scout Trooper was being offered at half price I also would think that was an awesome price as well; even though I'm paying full price (along with shipping & sales tax), I still think it is more than worth what I'm paying for it.

You got me started collecting the 1:6 scale line, which I like a lot. This is my first and only PF statue, which I really consider and personally view to be in the same class as my MR Studio Scale models.

Nooooooo!

...and swiveling his head is damn near impossible if you are gentle...Of course, who in their right mind takes an $800 piece and cranks the head to one side without fear or caution?
It took me a while until I finally did just that...It was very difficult....you have to work into it and then it moves with more ease.

I had forgot how big this thing really is. Seeing it at C4 was great but you kind of forget the awe factor after all you have seen is pictures for months.
If you can believe it, mine is STILL in its box where it has been since Tuesday. I measured my space and found out where I was going to put it, it will not fit. So I had to do a little house re-arraqnging upstairs to make room.
I have a fellow SW collector coming over next weekend and I might just wait until he is there so he can take pics of the grand opening of the box.

you'll find that id was designed to fit anywhere. The support rod allows you to turn the bike 360 degrees, so you just need room for the base and some air space.

That kind of packaging costs money. They tried to save us a few bucks by simply having a cardboard box with a black picture of the Bikerscout on it.

Toy Biz did a similar thing when they made the huge balrog. To save bucks, they didn't sup-up any fancy packaging.

I called SSC on Wednesday to have them go ahead and make my final Flex-Pay payment now. They said over the phone they would probably ship it to me today, which means if it does I'll get it tomorrow, Friday. I work from home on Fridays so this will work out great if it all goes down as expected.

It has now been charged and I'm now waiting for it to ship. Sideshow informed me on the phone it would ship sometime in the next couple of business days, so right now I'm probably looking at sometime next week. Thankfully because of my location I'll get it overnight when it is shipped.

Got a question for anyone who has this piece in hand!

I am moving soon, my PF Scout should be here next month - Should I remove it from its packaging to inspect it or wait until I move to open it?

xopolos
03-14-2008, 12:05 PM
By all means wait! To begin, this item is very well packaged...every nook and cranny is filled with foam. Finally, and most importantly after you open it, packing it back up will be a challenge or time comsuming at the least. For a bit, I wasn't sure the packaging was going to fit back into the box, even after I removed the statue. So, if it's within the 30 day guarantee, I say wait.

I would HIGHLY recommend waiting as I would not trust ME to move this item outside of where it was unpacked to its ultimate resting point. The Sideshow packaging strategy is designed to protect this item until it is opened. Once opened, you are now changing how tihngs are resting, you will lose the taped packaging (as it will tear when you remove it) plus it is a very snug fit into the polystyrene molding.

You have it in posssession, you have waited a long time.. a little bit longer is worth it for a piece of mind.

Id wait.

Amir

I would open it up in a methodical way just so you can confirm there are no factory defects, I think you only have 30 days to ask Sideshow for exchange if a item is defective in anyway. So you might open it up once you move and notice something really wrong with it and then you would be stuck with it, first I would find out exactly what Sideshow’s policy on return/exchange is and then decide.

Woo-Hoo, my speeder bike shipped yesterday and was just delivered by FedEx Home this morning. Based on the writing on the outside of the box it looks like I got #260.

I'm now shopping for a custom acrylic case through my local fabricators. It looks like I'll be in the $300 range for the case by getting it local and not having to pay shipping. I'll post more on the case options once I have some firm quotes.

It's the shipping that gets me because I'm on the west coast. I ordered my acyclic case for my MR Y-Wing through Cases for Collectibles, the shipping was almost as much as the case itself because of the physical size and distance shipped. That is why I'm looking for a local fabricator this time.

A few questions to those who have one in hand.

How much articulation does his right arm have? how far forward can it
point? is the gun permanently attached to the right hand?

DarthPotts1975

i really dont want to move mine anymore since i have him in a perfect pose.
from what i remember once you stop being scared that you're going to break it the head and arm do move fairly easy.
the pistol is attached and i didnt try posing it forward.

I opened my case up to inspect the speeder for damage before sealing it back up while I wait for the display case to be made. I did take the scout out of the packing and played with its articulation a bit. From what I noticed the head is stiff as others have mentioned, but it does turn completely side to side and can be tilted up and down some. The legs are articulated some at the knees to facilitate placing the feet on the foot pedals. The right arm joints are stiff but I was able to move it around enough by the shoulder and elbow to duplicate the shooting back pose of the prototype, it also could move forward from what I saw, but I did not test it for its full range of motion in that direction. The pistol is molded to the hand and the wrist is fixed in place.

What is the scale of the studio scale speeder(s) used in ROTJ?

In the last Sideshow podcast about the making of their Speederbike they stated that the studio scale stop motion model used for ROTJ was about 1/4 scale. This would make the PF Biker Scout and Speederbike a true studio scale model.

Yes but it's the "about" that makes the world of difference. The sources I've seen says the mini was 81 cm, another says 30 in., which would make the SSC version a tad larger. From a post on the RPF:

</font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font>
I went to the Sideshow panel Q&A on Saturday and they talked about the new 1/4 scale speeder and said that they took the blueprints from the full size speeder and used those to scale it down. They also went through the archives and used the real full sized speeder bike to get the greeblies correct. This is not supposed to be studio scale, just 1/4 scale.

[/QUOTE]

The only way to be certain is ask Sideshow to confirm the scale but it is marketed as 1/4 not Studio Scale...

It is ¼ scale for certain, I understand that to a purist point of view it is not going to be a legalistic true definition of a studio scale, but to me in my personal collection its close enough.

The dimensions for the custom case I'm having quoted are:

38 long x 21 wide x 23.5 high

I'm getting quotes from both a local acrylics fabricator and Cases For Collectibles. The latter will probably be too costly for the shipping to make it worthwhile, but I'll see when the quote arrives.

Yes, I agree the shipping cost would probably offset the savings of purchasing from cases for collectibles. Unfortunately my local acrylic/glass companies do not assemble, they only cut the pieces. I had to glue my own MR Falcon case together.

Shadow I'm sure you'll probably have a wide range of acrylic companies to choose from. . . considering you're in SoCal http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For me although all the photos look great, but for the money..I think it was too expensive and the quality I don't think its all that great by just reading some of the posts above...I love my Hasbro one and it display nicely.

Just my thoughts..I'm sure if you spent the money you sort have to love it.

I don't doubt the quality at all. But I do think it was way over priced. Would of been nice to see it around 500. Just my opinion.

I just ordered my upgraded custom acrylic display case for it and that is costing me $585 just for the complete case alone. The price of the speeder bike is justified to me, especially compared to the four MR Studio Scale models that I own. This one is by far no less impressive and worth every bit as much to me.

To compare this one to the Hasbro is just nonsense in my opinion; there is no valid comparison between the two any more than there would be comparing the Kenner Millennium Falcon to the Master Replicas Millennium Falcon.

I'm keeping both boxes in case I ever move to transport it in; besides I have a very large and complete secondary collection of MR and SS boxes stored in my home.

Who needs the items when you can collect their shipping boxes? http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The shipping to NY for mine was $80!!! Jesus!

Shipping to CA is $165.

That's...Just, insane. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I shudder to think what the shipping cost to Canada would be. It was one of the reasons I've held off - but it will be mine one day!

DarthTriumph,
What part is this exactly?!? Maybe a pic would help.
What did Sideshow customer service say on how to fix it? Now I'm worried about unpacking mine http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I haven't heard back from SSC (can't check my account from work)...
Here are the links to the images from the image library (this is NOT my specific bike).

Closed (http://www.rebelscum.com/Sideshow/14bikerscout/image30.asp)
Open (http://www.rebelscum.com/Sideshow/14bikerscout/image29.asp)

As I remember the flap on the prototype shown at Celebration 4 had also broken off during the course of the convention.

For mine that was the cost of shipping the custom acrylic case alone made from 3/16 acrylic. I ended up with 1/4 acrylic and a much heavier base. To ship the speeder bike alone was under $100.

Really? I would have then thought they would reinforce this MOVABLE part to ensure its stability. I didn't even touch it (I used a Q-Tip because I know how destructive oil from human skin can be) and snapola!

As far as *movie* use, are those directional and braking flaps? The bars are pulled back so perhaps the flaps would be down to slow the machine down (for the scene where he is firing). It's a stretch because I am stuck with them closed until I find a good gluing method that won't look like crap...(the hinge is about .5 inches long and .375 to .25 inches 'tall and deep or roughly the size of the tip of my pinky finger).

The real kicker is that my wife is holding this against me for any future purchase (you paid that much and it broke the second you touched it!).

I guess, for me, I am a 501st Scout Trooper and love anything Imperial Related... It just fits... I agree its pricy - but the Flexpay takes the pain away... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I wasn't really trying to compare it with the Hasbro one...but just saying for me it will do as it still displays very nicely.
To pay over $800 plus shipping this would have to be top notch for me, and I don't think it meets that thats all.
The MR Falcon now that a masterpiece and its certainly worth every penny (this will hold its value for sure)

And I do believe others and their honesty...I'm always excited when receiving something new and cool the emotions are over whelming I'm sure.

It would really upset me if I recd. something like that and it broke just by touching it http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sorry not here to upset anyone so please don't take it that way....I'm glad all who have recd. one are enjoying it.

I accept that is your personal view for yourself, which I can not question when stated that way. For me in my personal opinion the SS version's price is easily justified by the quality and substance of what it is.

Deathstar1000 great setup!

How stable is the Speeder Bike atop the Detolf? I see you also have your PF Grievous next to him. Just curious, are your cabinets on a soft surface like carpet or tile/hardwood flooring. . . I have some tall cases, but on carpet they seem to be a little wobbly.

Thanks Boba

He is very stable. The floor is tile. Those detolfs can take a lot apparently.
