Dutch/German collectors chime in: Info on 1977 rubber bootlegs please

    Hi Guys,

there is this very old article on the archive regarding dutch rubber bootlegs which appearently date back to 1977, even before Kenner was released and its said they came from the Netherlands.

Dutch Vader Bootleg and Mini-Me - Star Wars Collectors Archive
    http://theswca.com/index.php?action=...&item_id=78866
    http://theswca.com/index.php?action=...&item_id=48028

Even among the bootleg specialists that seems to be the only info.

Question: was there any 'proof 'of this early date and the country of origin- was the early date reported by many? Any additional infos on these out there?

I am asking cause they seem to pop up with the same frequency in Germany and the other day smoeone told me he saw the small ones in a german supermarket in 1982 and they were bagged with a header (same thing was said in an old post here on RS as well). Also, I found two examples just recently on a small toy show and the dealers had no leads to the Netherlands. It has been believed that the snaller ones were made later so that would fit. But question remains when and where the larger ones where produced. Anyone remembering these from the childhood days? I think it would be amazing if it was for a fact that they were being sold before any 12-back hit the shelves. That would give these items really a special touch as one of the first sw figures ever...

ANY info/ 1st hand story in addition to what has been said on the forums would be great and btw- I'd love to buy Vader, Chewy and Stormy

    Thanks,Mike

    Hi Mike

I had the 4 big dutch bootlegs . Tradet them with a childhood friend back as kid in the late 80s . He , like me is 36 and from 77 . He told me back then that he got them in Spain . His mom is Spanish , and he would go there every summer . I had Vader , chewie , stormtrooper and c-3po.

I asked him this summer about them ,when i saw on Facebook he was in Spain , but he did not remembere any thing about them . And his family there did not have any sw laying around :-(

Still have the beater Vader for sale and the nice 3po .

    Ho Soren,

    thanky for your reply.
So you are saying the 4 you had were definately bought in Spain?
But as the original owner was born in 1977 they were obviously bought many years later.

That doesnt solve the question if they were sold as early as 1977 but that they wew definately sold many years later (any idea when it was boguth approx. in Spain? When your friend was like 5-10 I guess so between 1980 and 1985?)

I heard that one set was also found in Australia so its really a miracle how these spread over the globe, who produced them and what the countr of origin would be...

Thany for the input Soren, am looking forward to learning more :-)

    Thanks, Mike

Yeah, I landed a near complete set a few years ago from Australia and I've seen a few others come out of there. The small Vader that I got from Chad I do believe came from Germany. I think the early info pinpointing them as Dutch came from Dylan and was never disputed. The Mex/SA line is named so as stories circulated that they came from South America. They later proved to be from Mexico but the name stuck. These may very well be from some place else but no proof has ever surfaced. My small R2 came from a German collector too. Hmm, I wonder if the small ones source to Germany?? If so, I need a Stormtrooper and Chewbacca finish my set and Joe needs a R2 and Chewbacca to finish his. Keep us in mind. LOL

The 5" ones do turn up. I've had many over the years and spent time upgrading mine. The R2 and Chewbacca are rare though. I think there are 2 R2s known and either 2 or 3 Chewbaccas. I never did find out if Joe's is the one Dylan owned. It's one of my favorite sets and would be one of the last bootlegs to go.

Thank for the info John- I knew you would participate in this threat :-)
I think the small ones were definately sold in german REWE supermarkets in baggies with cardboard header. To different people said the same. They were seen in 1982.

Which Dylan is is who marked them as dutch for a decade ? :-) Can I get his details to ask him?

    Australia- Germany- Spain...Netherlads....pretty confusing...

Regarding the R2's: If I count 2 so far- please add a third one I just recently found :-)

    Best, Mike

ps. and sure I will keep you in mind for the smaller ones-I also know that Joe needs and R2- its not known if there ever was a small Chewy so basicall the small set is complete without one :-)

Wow! Are they selling for that much now? I remember when I had trouble moving some for $150. Wonder what a Chewbacca or R2 would bring if a Stormtrooper sells for $600?? My set just increased in value, a LOT. LOL Here's mine for reference.

Thanks for ruining the prices Soren as I am on the hunt now :-) I think the market for these is extremeley extremely limited. I know 5 people collecting these. So if all of the 5 have found lets say a 3po, the prices will tank. I seriously think that the 600 is extremely high and am not sure if that was the asking for final price- however, lets go back to the 150 usd prices and try to find out more about the history of these and not the prices :-)

Your set is awesome John, all have the loops and are in great condition. I dont dig the small ones but the big ones are really impressive. If I didnt know that these were untouchable I'd make dirty offers now :-)

    Thanks, Mike

Dont know if it helps Michael, but someone from the German forum has a few (pm sent )

I talked to him not long ago about those and he even had some "small" spares he sold recently if I remember right??

Anyway....I never did know they are that rare! :O

Good luck on the hunt everyone!! Seems that German market in LU is always good for some real rare bootleg stuff....and Michael and I never met there because one of us always has no time
