My biggest problem with the banning isn't the lack of a warning, but since when do we have to placate to those that don't have enough foresight to read the rules? I'm a bit disappointed that instead of teaching the new poster to not do that kind of thing in the vintage section, we have to ban a well respected member of the vintage community.

The new poster flew in the face of the rules of RS. He couldn't post his meaningless thread in any of the modern sections, that the topic was meant for, so he knowingly came to the vintage section where he could post freely. Joe called him on it, and the new guy freaked out. After his little tirade with Joe, he then went on a witch hunt for Joe in the Avengers thread. The worst part about the whole thing is the new poster claimed to have run "a large forum" on his own. So he should've known all about forum etiquette and reading the rules of the boards.

It's a shame that the original thread has been deleted.

As a bit of feedback from somebody else who runs a forum, I suggest that the admin/mod team find somebody to replace Shane who is a bit more 'hands on.' I realise that mods should be neutral, not get involved in poor behaviour etc, but without Shane it's a bit too extreme the other way. I honestly can't even remember the last time a mod other than Shane joined in a conversation, let alone started a post.

IMO it's important to have a balance of silent mods and active mods, and at the moment this place is too heavy towards silent. It feels a bit impersonal, and it's important to have somebody with authority available to act AND comment on situations like this.

Completely agree Chris. The mod could have stepped in and explained to the new poster why he was in the wrong and made it a "teaching experience". Also, I don't recall many threads being deleted from the vintage section, but rather locked, so people late to the game could actually have seen what went down and how the poster was reacting. I certainly don't think Joe should have been banned, especially without warning, but it would be nice to hear from the mod the reason behind it.

Yes, flat out that is correct, but he was still a new member and typically a mod steps in and tells those who are out of line to stop it or they'll get banned. He used the Avengers thread as an example of another OT post here and it would have been better hearing from a mod, rather than another member, why that example was okay and his post was not.

I agree, but then again, in this particular case it went downhill pretty fast. Joe's first comment was a bit harsh perhaps, but the new guy came right back with some pretty inappropriate remarks, and it all went South. But I still think there should have been a stern warning, with a thread lock instead of a delete.

If I recall correctly, when Shane did hand out bans before, it was either a definate "you're outta here!" or it was more of a gentle slap of two weeks. I could be wrong about that, and someone feel free to correct me if I'm remembering wrong. One month seems like a longer period of time, than was normal previously, for a temporary suspension.

Sure Joe was harsh in his tongue at this newcommer, but I also think the newcommer was quite rude calling us immature teenagers and stuff like that. He was also abusive taking about the times he served his country and doubt people would dare talk to him like that in real life. Well he obviously haven't met Joe, don't get me wrong, Joe is a nice and friendly guy, but he's not the kind of guy, I would like to meet in a fight.

I too thing a ban or quarantine was too hard, but it might have been the sum of times he has been harsh to newcommers (personally, I have never had a tough word with Joe), but he can be hard in his tone, but many times I find his hard tone acceptable, as some people ask very weird question or type some pure nonsense. I know many new members don't like Joe and John A in the beginning because of this, but both are experienced collectors, who expect others to do a bit of research before asking. Especially John is hard when it comes to this, remember on situation were a new members asked a question, and there was a thread about the very same topic on the first or second page, don't remember what John answered, but it was not super nice, in such a case I thing a hard answer is absolutely ok.

But hopefully Joe will be back soon.

I think everyone learned a lesson. Let them both back. The newer guy I'm sure learned a valuable lesson on rules. And JoeY is a flippen ROCK star collector and musician and good guy. This board is far better off with him (JoeY) here...
