Leif, don't bother. I have the same kit. The lighting in it is from the 70's and is not good at all. I'd have to go back and look at the book on it but I THINK the only lights that come with it are a basic light in the cockpit, turrets and then 1 or 2 small bulbs in the engine area. IMO You're better off trying to sell it again, Getting the Fine Molds kit and adding a light conversion kit to it.

The MPC kit needs a Lot of work put into it...I did a ton of scratch building etc. Having said that however, It also gets a lot of things right. Also, it is based on the Five Foot Falcon Miniature used in Star Wars as seen in 1977. Which happens to be my Favorite version of the ship.I enjoyed the extra work involved.

Sorry but the Fine Molds Kit, as good as it is, is not the be all to end all of Millennium Falcon Models. Yes, right out of the box you will be rewarded with a stunning Build up(not including paint and weathering).

I should know. I built Two of them. They get a lot of stuff wrong. For the money and the research put into it, it should be a perfect model...which it isn't.

So I say, go for the Build with the old MPC kit(if you favor the original Falcon, if not, the Fine Molds represents the 32" from Empire and Jedi)...and most of all..HAVE FUN!

Did MPC make Star Wars kits back in the 1970's and early 1980's? I thought only Airfix made Star Wars kits back then.

In North America the MPC kits are what we had, at least around here. I only recently spotted a vintage MF Airfix kit for the first time. Airfix was probably more in Europe (from the UK).

Yeah, that Kit Leif has originally came out in 79 if I'm not mistaken. And to my knowledge His version is more rare because they stopped putting the lighting kit in it real quick. So to have one with a Empire sticker and the lights is pretty rare.

MPC - You're right on the kits having flaws. No kit is perfectly correct. I personally like the Fine Molds kit becuase Empire is my favorite movie. If you decide to do another MPC Falcon kit kit, hit me up on a PM. I have a sci-fi model magazine back from the mid 90's with the step by step to do a cockpit conversion. I can scan the pages and email them to you. It might have some info / products you can get at a hardware store and tips in it that might help you out even more on the conversion.

And.... You gotta admit MPC, that out of the box that AMT/Ertl/MPC falcon kit has more wrong with it than right. That kit to make it as accurate as possible takes a lot of conversion and a lot of work.

It's great to see other modelers on here. To bad theres not a specific portion of the forums for it.

I've tossed around buying a FineMolds kit a few times, but I'm not big on building in either scale its available in, and my only reason for considering another Falcon build would be for nostaligia. Probably a straight out of the box build. Besides if you get real picky about accuracy, the FineMolds Falcon isn't perfect either, though certainly the best available next to a scratch build.

Yup, the kit with the lights came out in 1979. Though the one I have was probably retailed more early 1980 during the runup to the release of ESB, or shortly afterward. It was kit# 1-1925.

Here's a neat webpage re: the Airfix version, and others. Seem the Airfix kit was a re-release of the MPC kit actually.

I agree, We need a Modeling forum here, after all a LOT of Star Wars Models and Modelers are out there!
Thanks for the thought about the Magazine article, But I already own it.

If I were to make an Empire version of the Falcon, it would be another Fine Molds. I don't really care for the Empire version of her though.. I don't like the addition of the extra Landing gear boxes or the elongated Cockpit and a lot of the Sidewall details, I know I am in a minority here. I fell in love with the Falcon when I saw her for the first time on the big screen in that magic summer of 1977.

Again, I prefer the 5' and the stubby cockpit and all the detailing on her, which, again is what my model represents. I think I nailed a lot of that with my MPC kit. It's not perfect, but I am more happy with it than the Fine Molds Falcon.

You are right the MPC needs a lot of work, as I have said myself, but I enjoyed all the work I put into it. The Fine Molds is a superb kit and I enjoyed building it as well. It's about choices and what Version you like better, and exactly how far you want to go on it...which is again up to the modeler.

That is what makes this Hobby FUN!!!
