For sure, I think Ventress is one of the best new characters introduced in this series and her story is really compelling.

I have not been in here much this season. And that is because I wanted to see how the Maul story unfolded and would be executed. As my long history here goes, most know why I stopped reading EU. Boba Fett and other characters that just wouldn't stay dead. I don't like bringing back characters that were "killed off." I was also dead set against seeing Maul brought back. If for no other reason, you had so many great new characters that had been introduced in the series so far. I thought bringing him back was a bad idea and I feared they were about to reduce Clone Wars from G Level canon to some kind of what if Infinities story. And then we got spider Maul in the lead up to this episode and I thought I could see the end of my interest in the show. Then I watched this episode...

This was without a doubt one of the best episodes of the series so far. Easily in my top ten of favorites. Wonderfully written, wonderfully directed, and another exception job by Sam Witwer (and Clancy Brown wasn't too shabby either.) This was a very good action oriented, and character oriented episode. My other fear was that Darth Maul was going to be just another villain of the week to be discarded almost immediately. No real need to worry there either. Also we get our first honest to goodness cliffhanger in a Star Wars story since Empire Strikes Back. This is an episode that is going to have ramification. There are so many possibilities and it will be a long wait till October. Can't wait.

    5/5

Very dark episode too. The Dark Side was strong with this one.
No, that's just what they would expect us to do.

Great episode and I agree with most of what has already been said. Revenge was well written and had a great cliffhanger ending. My favorite part is the OWK/Ventress vs Maul/Savage duel all with red sabers.
One thing both my 10 yr old son and I noticed while watching the episode a second time, is that there is a Wilheim scream during the scene when Talzin is taking the crazy out of Maul with her magic. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this and had any thoughts as to why it's there?

    Just listened to the roundtable.
Why are people still having problem with magic in Star Wars? The Force is magic! Look at what it does! Telekinesis, Telepathy, Force Lighting, Fortune Telling, Mind Control, and becoming an intergallactic blue ghost!

And need i remind eveyone that there is, on Dagobah, a magical cave? ESB being the best Star Wars movie, i think unexplained force manifestation are part of Star Wars since 1982!

I think the problem some people have is with magic different to the Force. Personally, I'm A-OK with it.

I like magic and don't have a problem with it in TCW. But the degree of the magic is a (very minor) concern of mine. Talzin seems to be able to do just about anything. She can apparently teleport and manifest items out of thin air. She can turn mangled droids into organically integrated limbs at a mere wave of her hand. She can reach across vast stretches of space and kill a Sith Lord (almost). I understand that some of that was done because of time constraints and it moved the story along. But it makes her appear to have limitless power and turns her into a mere plot device. It also makes me wonder, with all that power, why she doesn't just kill Dooku, Sidious, and anyone else that threatens her from some remote location where battledroids can't come and disrupt her spell. The Force is powerful, but it isn't limitless. It has constraints and some things take a great deal of effort or at least slow cultivation. Talzin can mumble an incantation and imbue a fairly regular guy with vast power and a super-sized body. Again, I don't have a problem with this because I am more interested in a good story, but I think it could take away from the struggles and efforts made by the Force-weilding characters who don't seem so free to make whatever they imagine come into reality.

She needed something from Dooku to affect him. She had a lock of his hair to create that voodoo doll. So her powers do have limits. We know from the Plageus book that Sidious could force choke the bird when he was on the holo call with Nute Gunray. Darth Vader force choked Ozzel in Empire, etc. She cast a spell, I wonder if we will see Maul's legs vanish if they kill Talzin. The dead night sisters were useless once the droids killed the spell caster.

    Good points.

For argument’s sake, let’s say the ability to Force choke over great distances requires line of sight. And for Talzin to do her hocus pocus she needed a piece of her victim (Dooku’s hair). I’d call it a wash except that Talzin wasn’t killing a bird or a windbag; she was killing a Sith Lord who seemed helpless to counter her spell. Despite this minor quibble, I agree with you that this is a limitation of her power. Perhaps I shouldn’t have said “limitless” but, rather, that her power is far less limited than that of Force-users. Requiring a lock of hair it one instance doesn’t strike me as particularly limiting when set against all the other fantastical things she can do.

Once you go down the Dark Side, forever will it dominate your destiny.

Maybe Talzin knows more about the working of the Force then we think. She looks as strong as Yoda or Sidious, but yet she is content to stay on Dathomir. I feel like she is not driven my compassion like a Jedi, but nor is she a boiling cauldron of hate like a Sith. She is more calculating and mystical, like a sorceress. And it gives another aspect to the Dark Side, and i like it.

Now, for Ventress... i like her, but she needs to stay Sith. Because if she goes good, it will undermine Anakin's turning in RoTJ. Remember, in the OT, it's pretty clear that you can't come back from the Dark Side, and Luke's saving of Darth Vader is a first. I don't want a new special edition, where Yoda tells Luke how you can't come back from the Dark Side and then Obiwan reminds him that Ventresss did...
