TPM 3D - What did you think? The good, the bad and the Ugly!

Here's a thread to discuss what you think about TPM in 3D for those that have seen it.

I saw TPM in 3D earlier today and wow what a disappointment the 3D is. 3D just doesn't translate well on screen, Imo most characters still look pretty flat unlike other proper 3D films. The most we get is depth in a number of scenes but that's about it, nothing really mind blowing.

Honestly the only thing good about it's release is seeing the film on the big screen and the lucasfilm and opening crawl in 3D otherwise this film could be a miss.

I'm holding out it'll do well so the others get made.

What does everyone who's seen it think about it?

Totally agree GNT. I saw it tonight and didn't think the 3D added anything to the film. A couple of scenes popped out and and good depth but most looked flat just as it normally would. The couple shots I remember looking good were the opening crawl and the scene where Qui-Gon talks to Watto after the podrace to sort out his beats, the depth looking over the arena is fantastic and the way Watto flies towards the camera is a treat but aside from that nothing stands out.

I expected more but these conversions never really live up the the expectations. Biggest plus was seeing Star Wars on the big screen again even if it was Episode 1!

The opening crawl was impressive but that would be an easy transfer for them to do but the rest wasn't as impressive.

I don't think any scene really stood out which is pretty sad IMO.

I'm in agreement as well. The opening crawl was fantastic and then things just seemed underdone. You could see some depth, but rarely did anything look really different. The podrace was an exception and some of the Naboo battle towards the end. It was good to see the Blu-ray version on the big screen though with the added Coruscant taxi scene and the longer intro of the podracers. A few other tweaks were more obvious in the larger format, extra CGI bits I had missed in the Blu-Ray versions. Still the suckiest film in the saga in my opinion.

Saw it last night and aside from the crawl, some texture on clothing and Anakin magnetising the cable during the pod-race was REALLY DISAPPOINTED in the whole thing......

When compared to AVATAR one sees how lazy and slapdash this actually is......

I was expecting lightsabers flying out the screen, pieces of junked pod-racers hurtling towards me,debris from the Droid control ship like a flaming comet about to engulf the cinema...!!!!!

I instead got depth in OOM-9 in his AAT and good texture and detail on Trisha Biggars wardrobe???!!!!!!

Which is great if you are a fashionista(I'm not)

    Undercooked,half baked,uninspiring and ultimately a huge let-down.....

And that's not TPM I'm talking about....it was actually ok and Yoda looked amazing!!!

The 3D.....poorest 3D movie yet.....compared to Avatar, the Lion King and even THOR this was underwhelming and doesn't bode well for future installments.....

I see no reason why I won't enjoy it. I've never seen a film in 3D, so I'll have nothing to compare it to.

did George make any additional changes/tweaks/additions/edits to the movie for the 3D edition? or is it the same version of the movie that was on the blu-ray converted into underwhelming ********* three dimensions?

You might enjoy it, to really understand how bad the 3D is you'd have to have seen a real 3D movie where objects are jumping off the screen so to speak, TPM doesn't do any of that.

So there's really no 3D (read: very little) but everyone who sees it has to pay a premium for the 3D.

    Makes sense.

I don't think there's been any films converted to 3D where audiences praised the 3D. I think it's just a gimmick to increase ticket prices.

Sounds like they should have done a press release with "Simple viewing instructions: Find convenient wall (any wall will do but concrete or other masonry preferable). Face wall at a distance of one foot. Lean forward rapidly with no attempt to stop yourself from making contact with wall at the highest velocity possible. Repeat until you have trouble remembering your last name. Then go see the newest instalment in the Star Wars Saga: The Phantom Menace!!!!"
