Ya take a few days vacation and you miss all the action on the AF front. haha
Hey Ben. Welcome to our little world of Galoobaphiles...or something like that. I'm a pretty hardcore AF-addict, and semi-crazy scale-modeler. I remember starting off with the micro machines, then moving to AF when I saw the first wave. I love the balance of size, accuracy, and playability. They may not have the features of Hasbro's lineup, but they never released a muscle-ridden Luke (at the time was the standard Hasbro figure style).
If you get a chance, please check out my website below. I've got photo archives and my own customs section (trying to fill in the gaps we are left with). If you are really an X-wing addict, you may want to eventually try customizing some of your own. I know Goldleaderone has a slew of custom X-wings with nearly everyone? at the Battle of Yavin.
For figures, your best bet is eBay (oh joy of joys). There are plenty of loose lots that, for X-wings and such, are usually on the cheaper end of AFs. Also, note that the figures created for the first wave easily came apart (the legs popped out). So keep an eye out for figures missing torsos or mismatched leggings.

I believe it was the release of the Slave I and the gold logo boxes that Galoob changed the figures to be less prone to dismemberment.
Cheers and again, welcome
