    From G4:

Star Wars: The Old Republic Release Date Is Tied To The Beta

Posted 2 hours 12 mins ago - By Nikole Zivalich

The release date for the mega-MMO Star Wars: The Old Repbulic is still unknown. Many gamers, myself included, have been wondering what BioWare and EA are waiting for. According to EA Labels boss, Frank Gibeau, the reason they haven't committed to a release date yet is they want to see how well the beta goes.

"It is definitely tied to the beta test feedback that's ongoing and so far, so good. We feel good about the date that we're heading towards but you're right, you could have a Crazy Ivan show up in the September/October beta test and be like, 'wow, I've got to fix that.'"

During their PAX panel last weekend BioWare announced the SW:TOR beta would begin on September 2, 2011. That's this Friday, people! The amount of bugs, glitches and problems discovered over upcoming beta weekends will determine when the game is released. BioWare and EA are still aiming for this holiday but they don't want to rush The Old Republic.

"We're totally focused on quality, so whatever the beta test tells us is what will be the determining variable on when we will hit."

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a PC exclusive that will be released "when it's ready."

I am assuming those must be the min specs for your PC to have that is posted above. At least my '07 PC will be able to run it. I look forward to the adventure and PvP. If mine lags at all I will be out for a new one.

Oh ya, hope they do have surnames. I want to carry my online family surname to this game as well.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic - Part 2

I finally got around to trying out Warzone PvP today.

First I played Hutball, which is where there's a neutral ball in the center. The two teams fight for the ball and have to get it across the enemy scoreline to get points. Throughout the course is environmental hazards, plus everyone is fighting each other. In my experience pretty much everyone focused in killing each other instead of trying to score the ball.

The other mode I played was essentially a poorman's version of Titan mode from Battlefield 2142. There's three turrets you both teams fight to capture and they fire on the enemy ship. First ship destroyed looses.

It was not a fun experience overall. Whenever I played PvP, lag spikes were wild and the framerate got really choppy. Plus it was a bit unfair. All levels are thrown in together. I'm level 31, so the level 50s destroy me, while I massacre the level 20s. I would like to see some separation by level tiers.

After playing more of the beta recently, I think they're going to have to do a hell of a lot of work if they want a polished game out by the end of the year.

Not sure if it's an NDA violation, but I definitely agree with you.

Although, I'm pretty sure the version of the game we're playing is about 3 builds old. When they release the build they're currently working on, I think you'll be surprised just how finished the game truly is.

I remember this from Galaxies (which was, in fact, a horrible product at launch), LOTRO, and a couple other games I beta tested. You think the game is SOOO broken, then they publish the new build to test and it's a giant leap forward.

To all the Beta players, is there a chat filter? I don't particularly want to have profanity spouted at me. Is there a filter that catches the curse words said by other players? Or better, a mute button, so you can't here any other players at all?

There is both. The chat can be filtered, and also you can close the chat window entirely if you wish.

There's no built in audio chat yet, so I don't know how that will be at launch.
