    Once again...

Trying to find the words to express how these look. Breathtaking, gorgeous, stunning, all fall short.

Truly inspiring, and again raises the standard.

What stands out with these is how you achieved a very clean 'soft look'. The edges of the color markings are defined, yet have the soft edge. Also the overall texture is perfect, makes the cream areas appear ceramic.

    Very high quality work!

BARF, your work is is fantastic and inspiring. Any suggestions on pin striping R5 domes? Having a hard time getting a clean mask on such fine lines for R5-D4's dome. Not a fan of the decals because they often don't survive the weathering due to their fragile nature.

Those are gorgeous, Barf! Just out of curiosity though, why the different eye colours?

From the colors he used for the eyes, I would guess to show the gender of their personalities.

Using 'gender' & 'person' in referring to a droid is very thought provoking. To early in the morning...

Thank you again, all. The pin striping is a b!tch to accomplish. I use Testors model masking tape and cut it to size. The narrower you cut it, the more you can bend it without lifting or folding.

The he eyes on R5-C7 were done as my client requested. Anything but red, which is what the toy had. The picture reference also looks to show a hint of red, which is why I went with a pink tone for mine. Nothing to do with male or female. Just artistic freedom.

Today I bring to you two new members to my Astromech family.

From Episode I, R2-N3, The Royal Astromech aboard Queen Amidala's Shuttle. The key to this droid is achieving the dark green. This is not the same droid as R2-A6, which is slightly lighter green.

From Episode IV, R3-T2, seen roaming the streets of Mos Eisley just before the famous "move along" scene. The body is R2-D2, dark blue. Easy enough, but the the dome is not your typical red. A slight off red. Had to custom mix that red. Really hard to capture in a pic but I think I got it.

    Enjoy!

Thanks BARF! I'll have to check out the Testors tape. I haven't had much luck with the Tamiya tape not crinkling on the curve, even when cut to size. New droids look great too. I love how R3-T2 turned out. Nice color match on the dome.

Tamiya tape is not good for pin striping. The edges are are not crisp enough. I use it often though for masking larger areas.

Here are a few options for pin striping. Micheal's usually has a 40% coupon so you can really get a great deal.

    3 rolls of 1/8"

    3 diffrent sizes 1/4" 1/8" 1/16"

    1/32" 3/64" 1/16" 3/32" 1/8" 3/16" 1/4" and 3/8"

The way I do it is cut to size. The thinner it is, the more it will conform to a curved surface like R2's dome. Just be aware that the Testors tape is much stickier than Tamiya tape so there is a chance you will peel off any underlying paint you may have applied. This is where the frustration begins.

    Caution: extreme patience is required

    Good luck!

Wow, BARF! Incredible as always. That red dome is so slick. And man, I know you made it a while back, but the R2-B1 still gets me every time. Such a great color combo. Who am I kidding, they all do!

That's such a fantastic collection of droids. R3-T2 and the black & blue Mos Eisley droids are just perfect. Did you get the single gray panel on the back of them?

Very nice work on the tone of N3's green. The Naboo droids were all supposed to match the same tone as R2-D2's blue.
