British food might be famous for all the wrong reasons but there are plenty of eateries in London. Pubs, restaurants, greasy spoons, burger vans and restaurants are all within easy reach of the venue so pop your thoughts down and spare other attendees a dose of London Belly http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Here's a list of food guides:

www.london-eating.co.uk/ (http://www.london-eating.co.uk/)

Here's a list of restaurant links:

Starvin' Marvin's - http://www.starvinmarvins.co.uk/site.asp
Cafe Pacfico - http://www.cafepacifico-laperla.com/cafepacifico/index.htm

I'll add to these as more get suggested.

The best Japanese restaurant in the UK is in London - Tokyo Diner (http://www.london-eating.co.uk/2058.htm) is in the West End. It's not cheap (but not expensive either) and the food is fantastic. I'm hardly qualified to say this because I don't really like Japanese food, but the one time I ate there I couldn't get enough. Must be the small portions and MSG http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you really have to go "American" then try and get out to Starvin' Marvin's (http://www.starvinmarvins.co.uk/site.asp) on the A40. The food is average but cheap, the portions aren't as large as you'd find in the USA but the atmosphere is great. It also helps that it is in one of those funny silver tubes that so many diners were in during the 1950s.

And if you want TexMex there is The Embassy of Texas (http://www.texasembassy.com/texasmain.htm) which serves a blend of Mexican-American food, and Cafe Pacifico (http://www.cafepacifico-laperla.com/cafepacifico/index.htm), which serves traditional Mexican food in a typical cantina environment. Both are in the West End are come highly recommended by my waistline http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's a review of the restaurant Dave is recommending:

"went to a chinese resturant called wonkies in central london. the waitress served me a flat coke. I complained and demanded a fresh one. she called the manager. To my horror the man walked up, picked up my coke, took a sip and said nothings wrong with it. he set it down b4 me and walked away. I was like Huh?!"

Let's ignore Dave from now on OK?!

No way, Wonkees is world famous for it's rudeness, it's hilarious as they just don't care and have a go at you if you are not ready to order, the reviewer just didn't get it I guess.

Where's the best place to get a kebob? I have been dying for one of those for about a year. They just look so darn good.

Jeremy

Kebab's can be found everywhere in London, and there is no "best place" because anywhere that serves street food is going to have questionable standards.

But don't let me put you off - after 8pm all you'll need to do is follow your nose.

Jeremy

Yes, we have Turks and Greeks in the UK too you know http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif You'll probably see more kebab houses in London than all of Germany and Austria put together.

Except our kebabs aren't made of chicken, or beef or any other identifiable meat for that matter. Most of us simply refer to the contents as "elephant [censored]" because that is marginally more appealing than considering what is really in them "meat".

Not 100% on this but I don't think it's legal to buy a kebab in this country unless you're too drunk to order it properly, so unless you'll be drinking all the way here hit a pub first.

can we talk a little about price? here in the states a burger can be bought for 1 - 5 dollars. it would be a little tough for me to justify 5 pounds (about 10 dollars) for a burger. i would love to experience food that the US cant offer, but i would like to save a few pounds/dollars in the process any advice for meals on a budget?

If you dont like the price of Whoppers dont go for Fish and Chips, its £4 where I live so in london its probably twice that if not more, fish is not cheap these days.

Don't get me started on that one ..

It brings back memories from CIII when I was with some other guys in the Indy Steak & Shake. A Waitress was asking what dressing I'd like on my french fries.

The dialogue went something like this:

Kris: "I'll have the french fries, and salad with mayonnaise"
Waitress: "Mayonnaise? No ranch or anything?"
Kris: "Just mayonnaise"
Waitress: "Sure?"
Kris: "All I want is mayonnaise!!!"
Waitress: "Positive?"
Kris: "Yes!!!!"

After 3 confirmations of my order she finally left. Good thing I was assured by my friends that not everyone saw Pulp Fiction as much as we did.

I have just scoured the facilities at ExCel and the neighbourhood immediately adjacent to the conference center and I did not see any overtly obvious veggie restaurants. I'm going to recommend that you look towards Canary Wharf (15 mins by train) or central London (25 mins by train).

In fact I am going to recommend that anyone who wants to eat or drink off site (by which I mean not within ExCel or in their hotel's restaurants/bars) would go to Canary Wharf or central London.

I'll be putting together the Euroscum guide to surviving CE in the next few weeks, and so more will be revealed soon.
