Just not digging the porg design at all. If they're kept for food like chickens, fine. But if their supposed to be a pivotal character. IDK...

If they're being written in as some kind of non-sentient, Force sensitive/wielding beings, wouldn't that open up another couple of threads! We'll see....

The Porg really makes me worried. I'm not liking the design either. I feel like Rey is going to throw out a Pokeball and try to catch one. Oh no! Wild Sith Lord appears! Porg! I chose YOU!

I don't have a problem with marketing films. Blockbusters aren't just for the art, sadly often the art is one of the least important aspects, but they're also for business. I get it. When I start having an issue is when a character or whatever in SW is explicitly designed first for marketing...and servicing the story takes second chair. I think that's clearly the essence of what the Porg is. Disney said "We need something to make millions off of toys with!" So enters: the Porg!

I am hoping they have a very limited amount of screen time. I also kind of take issue with this apparently dark, broodingly grumpy, and depressed Luke Skywalker...being surrounded by pokemon. Kind of a clash of atmosphere, right there. Mix of emotions. Oil and water.

This creature just reminds me of the blatant commercial marketing of TPM and Ewoks, where you could just tell...this is a walking advertisement.

Looks like there is screen time between them and Chewbacca, but remember Chewie's just lost his lifelong friend. I realize Chewie's had time to brood and grief since D'Qar, but you've gotta wonder if this kind of shift in mood is somehow intentional in lieu of the coming Solo movie.

I did catch that photo too, I want to say I saw somewhere that a Chewbacca figure was packed with one too. I think! See...eeeeh! That makes me worried. The honestly do remind me of pokemon. But I also want to say I heard somewhere or read somewhere that Chewbacca doesn't like them. They annoy him. But maybe I dreamed that up because I can't site a source for it. My worry is that one becomes a pet on the Falcon.

I mean...I'm being very negative here. It's all in how it's done really. For all I really know, I'll love them. But initial impressions make me think Ewoks and Jar Jar all over again. My thing is, wasn't BB8 cute enough? And he can do both serious scenes and comical. It's hard for me to imagine a Porg in a serious scenario.

Personally, I have enough faith in Rian Johnson that he will not go overboard in regards to the Porg. If it were JJ I would be worried, but Johnson is on a completely different level than Abrams.

Retribution I would say from TPTB that currently helm Star Wars.....they're hoping to shove Porg sales figures in front of Lucas to subvert his obsession with Jar Jar. :)

Porgs are the key to all of this..

Honestly they're alright if they just appear in a couple scenes but seeing that the Chewie figure comes with one makes me feel like there's something more to them story wise.

If you thought Jar Jar was bad... seriously, I wasn't pumped up for the TLJ after TFA, but this kind of stuff really makes me doubt the Lucasfilm to Disney move.
Is anybody else Star Wars tired, and especially merchandise? Everywhere you go, in every store there is at least something Star Wars around... drives me nut. I would love to go back to the early 90s, where the only way you could find star wars was a comic book store, garage sale. Maybe I'm getting old :) But I see my stores full of crap Star Wars. Many different scales of figures, from miniature to superlarge (who collects Jakk's size, what place do you need???), Star Wars on every possible game/food/bathroom stuff...

I liked TFA, but yeah I agree especially on the Porg. I mean, there's cutesy animals in our own nature, so it stand an argument not everything in the SW universe is going to look like Weequay. But the thing just screams "Make something we can sell a plush of."

I do also agree about kind of missing when SW was more of a subculture and it wasn't plastered everywhere. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall for the pitch on "Star Wars Angry Birds Jenga." That's always been what I've considered the pinnacle of wtf merchandising.

Star Wars has always been marketing and merchandise heavy from pencils to figures to birthday cake Vader pans since the get go. From 77 to 85 star wars merchandise was everywhere and from 95/96 to now star wars merchandise is everywhere. For the better part of 40 years you could buy star wars stuff anywhere.

This post made me laugh. It's so true. I can go back to the late 80's and there was even less SW Stuff anywhere. It really hasn't let up for more than a few weeks since 1995. Ughhhhh!!!

I feel the same way. It's come to the point where I've started to purge my collection and only keep what I absolutely want too. I have a variety of other interests that I haven't been able to really explore more of ever since I got into SW. As for the Last Jedi merch, nothing really interests me but I'll probably pick up the Luke and Rey figures.

It really started with the Ewoks. SW essentially started film commercialism as we know it, now any and every summer blockbuster pretty much gets an action figure line. But the difference was that A New Hope and Empire, while having heavy marketed merchandise, the script to those films didn't include elements clearly included just to SHOWCASE up coming products. That began with Ewoks, where it's very clear they were introduced firstly to sell toys and only secondly to serve the story. That was the beginnings of tainting a script for sell-out levels of financial gain...

Then you cut to 1999, TPM's ideology was like Ewoks on steroids. The commercial levels of EP1 made Ewoks look almost tame. I remember not being able to escape the gaze of Darth Maul, from every department store to vending machine, his ugly visage was painted on it all. Then you saw the movie and he's in it for...what? 10 minutes, two lines of dialogue, and prematurely killed? I remember feeling robbed. The prequel ideology seemed to be less about scripting a good plot and more about shoving as many marketable prospects into the film as possible. Take Grievous: to me he's always been a blatant and shameless walking action figure concept. Someone came to Lucas, said "Hey, Darth Maul had a double-bladed lightsaber and everyone loved that! Well kids love giant robot cyborgs, give him four arms and FOUR lightsabers! We'll make a fortune on action figure royalties!" The very idea of four lightsabers, four arms, and robot just sounds like super deluxe action figure NOW available at Wal-Mart for ONLY $29.99! Then there's the obvious Jar Jar, Pod Racers, cartoony aspects...

For my money, I don't actually think Disney has been as bad as the prequels were. TFA was certainly beyond the originals as far as marketing campaign, but I do believe nothing in the script was blatantly sacrificed for the sake of sell, sell, sell! Rogue One was downright modest compared to TFA and especially the prequels. Nothing in there (IMO) reeked of obvious toy commercial ploy being included. I guess it's kind of harder to super merch. promote a film when every single character dies horribly though.

BB-8 was TFA's gimmick for toys, but I felt he was acceptable enough and served enough purpose to the plot to be forgiven for the "cute" factor. Then Disney pulled out the "P" card. The Porg is their Ewok. I'd say it's worse, but I haven't seen them in context yet so just going off of design. It's like they saw Pokemon Go is popular and decided to throw in some lost Pokemon. That's literally what it looks like to me. It makes me very...concerned. It's just shameless, there's just no denying its creation wasn't for the plot...it was to sell, sell, sell. The dreaded (as Joel Schumacher called it) "toyetics" of big-budget film-making. I'm fine with merchandising films, when I take issue is when it's done at the expense of telling a superior story and making what would or could have been a superior film.

Deak_Starkiller
08-21-2017, 10:31 PM
The Porg is their Ewok.

The Ewoks were more pivotal to the film whereas the Porg (as well as 'evil' BB-8) are not (IMO) since they fall into a category of characters that is strictly intended for emotional highlighting and/or balancing, something that very common in Disney's films. I may change judgment on that until I see the film, but until then...

Yeah you're absolutely right, the Ewoks were way better than this. They may have started the hardcore "toyetics" in SW, but like I said, they look downright subtle compared to some stuff they've done in the PT and ST. I'm in the same boat, I'm going to give the Porgs a chance...but I'm not hopeful. =P

Deak_Starkiller
08-22-2017, 07:43 AM
More to the point, the Ewoks were developed to convey a specific theme by Lucas including the look which was an anti-thesis to the original Wookiees form and made to look like the underdogs as he himself coined it. Characters like the Porg, BB-8 and even Chopper to some extent are designed to convey simple emotional responses not effecting the overall outcome of the film. As with Disney-type concepts, there is an highly inherent (though not entirely intended) kind of commercialism stemming out of that as well. :)
